Process Improvement

"If you can't describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing." W. Edwards Deming

Process is a key determinant of quality. Even a highly-skilled team using the most sophisticated technology may find they've created an unsatisfactory product without coherent, defined processes. Perhaps more painful, they may find themselves unable to repeat a successful performance absent an accurate process roadmap.

The 'Process Improvement' link takes you to a presentation I put together to introduce Software Process Improvement using the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model Integration® framework. The CMMi® framework from Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute provides a comprehensive outline of goals and practices leading ultimately to a state of continuous process improvement.

Adopting the model represented in the framework is not a trivial undertaking, but it can yield significant improvement in essential disciplines such as project management, configuration and change management and requirements management. Indeed, it reaches into all aspects of delivering a product with a consistent focus on quality. As always, I welcome your comments on the subject and/or content.
